How to Get The Most for Your Vacation Dollar

on

When you travel, you want to make sure that you are getting the best value for your money while you travel. That doesn’t mean that you are willing to give up luxuries – in fact, for many people, luxury is what a vacation is all about. However, you don’t want to have to pay more for things than you have to – for instance, why would you spend $200 a night on a hotel room when you can have the same room for two thirds of the price by using an online price comparison site? That extra money that you save can be used to make your vacation even more enjoyable. In fact, there are lots of different ways to save money when you go on vacation – and here are a few to get you started (image blow source).

Consider discounted car rental

One of the big expenses with any vacation is the cost of ground transportation. If you just rent a car when you arrive at your destination, it’s a good bet that you will pay more than you should do. You can generally get a better deal if you book your car online before you leave for your trip, and if you use rental car coupons, you will be able to save even more. Also, don’t get caught paying huge parking fees at the airport – take a taxi to the airport, rather than driving there in your own car. The taxi may cost $40 or $50, but that is far less than you will pay to keep your car at the airport for a week.

Pay less for public transportation.

If you are traveling somewhere such as Europe, you may find it more convenient and economical to use public transportation, and to only rent a car when you want to head out into the countryside. Most large cities in Europe have excellent public transportation systems that are designed to get you around the city quickly and easily. On the other hand, driving a car in a big European city can be an overwhelming experience – something that is best left to experienced locals. Also, if you are traveling long distances in Europe, then consider taking the train rather than heading to the airport. Not only is this more relaxing and economical – especially if you get a Eurail pass – it can also be nearly as fast as flying once you take into account the time you spend at the airport at either end.

Spend less on food

Finally, there is no need to spend all of your time eating at high-end restaurants when you travel – and it’s a particularly good idea to avoid hotel restaurants. While some hotel restaurants are very good – in fact, some of them even have Michelin stars – the truth is that the majority of them offer mediocre food at inflated prices. Do your research before you arrive at your destination to find restaurants and other eateries which are highly recommended but not highly priced. For example, if you are going to London, you can get excellent meals at local pubs, provided that you pick the right ones. If you find yourself someplace where you don’t know where to eat, ask the concierge at your hotel or pick up a local guide to the city.
