If you’re looking to go on holiday somewhere within this lovely country, good on you! We can always benefit from a bit of extra domestic tourism, and the UK really is a beautiful country – we can’t help but think it goes a little underappreciated by every one of us that lives here.
You may well be in need of a little inspiration, however, and that’s where we come in. We’ve consulted with some very knowledgeable sources, and have come away with a fab little list of incredible British cottage getaways.
Norfolk – North Farm Cottages
North Farm consists of two different cottages in Aylsham, available either together or on their own, and they make a great base from which you can explore the Brecks (or, if you prefer, head up north to go to the beach).
The owner, Felicity, will warmly welcome you with a basket of fresh eggs, local brews and even some homemade cake! Also, if you’re a bird lover, keep your eyes peeled – you may be able to see some of the resident barn owls.
Powys – Red Kite Tree Tent
This is the ultimate in eco-friendly tourism. With a really low impact on the environment, it’s the place to be if you fancy a green holiday. Like a massive, human chrysalis, the Tree Tent is a pod hanging from a tree in a conifer forest.
Inside, there’s a comfy sofa bed and a wood-burning stove – everything you need to keep warm! You’ll be nice and toasty when you’re wrapped up inside the thick, woollen covers, assured in the knowledge that you’re doing the world a favour.
Portmeirion – The Chantry
Of all the Portmeirion cottages, the Chantry has got to be our favourite (although the former fisherman’s cottage, White Horses, is a close second!). Bedding up to nine people, there is plenty of room there for a big family holiday.
You’ve got everything you could possibly hope for from a luxury cottage holiday – Wi-Fi, a nice TV for curling up in front of in the evening, a fully-stocked kitchen, and a gorgeous, panoramic view over Portmeirion and its estuary that is spectacular enough to take your breath away.
Bedfordshire – Old Warden
Set in Warden Abbey, Old Warden is the remains of an old Cistercian abbey, originally founded way back in 1135. The entire area is known as a site of great archaeological significance, and it’s nice and secluded, sitting in the middle of a wonderfully quiet field.
The entirety of the first floor consists of one giant, Tudor bedroom, replete with a glorious original fireplace. It’s a lovely place.
Devon – The Red Barn in Lydford
As you might imagine, you’ll find the Red Barn in the village of Lydford, located on the western side of Dartmoor, and the property is neatly tucked away into a valley, providing some serene comfort.
The Red Barn itself, however, is supreme luxury – with 6 beds, a heated pool, and a tennis court, you’ll live like royalty. You can even take in a spot of archery!
