The unique restaurants of the City of London

on

The ‘Square Mile’, or the City of London, is the historic heart of London and dates back over 2,000 years. It is the world’s leading centre of global finance, but also boasts some of the finest dining in London. City of London restaurants know that their customers expect the best and these are some of the restaurants that provide it in their own unique way.

1. Boisdale of Bishopsgate

Boisdale of Bishopsgate is the epitome of elegant fine dining.  From the moment you enter you know that you are about to have a unique and special experience. Relaxing with a pre-dinner cocktail to the soothing sounds of the jazz piano, you are carried away to another world. Moving to the restaurant, the Scottish-themed décor is a pre-cursor of what is to come, as you are presented with a menu of the finest food that Scotland has to offer, like fine Angus beef and oysters. Follow that up with a whiskey from Boisdale’s unsurpassed collection and you have the perfect evening for relaxation or to set the scene for closing that important business deal.

2. Coq d’Argent

The Coq d’Argent’s spectacular rooftop location sets it apart from other restaurants in the City of London. Sitting atop an office building it is reached by private lift. Offering superb classic French food in its main restaurant, it also has a grill for less formal dining at lunchtime. There are two terraces – one heated and covered for all-year-round dining alfresco-style – and a rooftop garden that make dining here a great experience. And why not round off the evening with a Havana cigar on the terrace as you watch the world go by?

3. Rhodes Twenty Four

You’ll need a head for heights if you visit Rhodes Twenty Four – it’s up on the 24th Floor of Tower 42, but from there you get spectacular panoramic views of London as you enjoy the exquisite British cuisine that Rhodes has to offer. The seasonally- adjusted menu includes pork, venison and turbot, all superbly cooked and presented. Elegant and sophisticated, Rhodes is a unique venue, perfect for any occasion.

4. Simpson’s Tavern

Established in 1757, Simpson’s tavern claims to be the oldest chophouse in London. You’ll find it in Ball Court that you reach from Cornhill via Dickensian Alley, an area that has been unchanged since the 18th century. Of all the restaurants in the City of London, Simpson’s is the one that will take you back in time as you dine on beautifully prepared British fare in surroundings that Dickens himself would have felt at home in. Steak and Kidney pie, roast of the day, lamb shank and other traditional favourites are perfect for this taste of British history.

5. Vanilla Black

Vanilla Black is reputed to be the best vegetarian restaurant in London. The creative and beautifully presented dishes are enough to make even the most hardened of meat eaters think twice about going vegetarian. Inspirational vegetarian dishes, friendly service and the stunning art deco-inspired interior make Vanilla Black one of the most unique restaurants in the City of London.

Great write up here James, I think few would argue with your choices. I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy the view and cuisine of Rhodes 24 for a very special occasion before it closed in September last year, so it will always hold a special place for me.

I’ve recently been encouraged to eat less red meat so Vanilla Black is one on my list and I’ll take a look at, but I enjoyed some dim sum and Chinese dishes at Ping Pong in central London on 1 Bread Street, London, EC4M 9BE without a course of meat in sight. If you get creative, it’s not as difficult as I thought to go without it actually!

There’s always great restaurants in and around this square mile though and it’s great that albeit very rarely, I’m lucky enough to taste a few things and visit a few places.
