The Algarve: A Golfer’s Paradise

on

Few pastimes are as relaxing and rewarding as a round of golf. And there are few spots on earth as enjoyable for a swift round or two than the Algarve. Tucked away on the southern coast of Portugal, this is a destination that has everything a keen golfer could dream of, from the courses themselves to the atmosphere and surroundings that make holidays to the Algarve so special.

Beautiful surroundings

Imagine looking out every morning on an endless vista of blue seas and sky that takes your breath away. And yet this isn’t a page in a glossy travel brochure; this is your holiday. From long, unspoilt beaches to tiny picturesque towns, the Algarve has it all.

You could spend all of your holiday doing nothing but taking photos and soaking it all up: the isolated village of Sagres, with its fortress and golden beaches, the tourist hotspot that is Lagos, complete with cobbled avenues and classic plazas, and the scenic port town of Tavira are all worth a visit when you’re not indulging in your main passion: golf.

Top-quality courses

The authorities and businesses of the Algarve have spent a great deal of time and money investing in golf courses that rival some of the best in the world, and these courses have the awards and professional endorsements to prove it. There are dozens of courses to choose from, so everyone can find something to suit their tastes and abilities (image by hayleywincott).

From late autumn to late spring, the area attracts large numbers of golfers looking for warm, comfortable weather and beautiful coastal scenery. At each course, you can expect first-class facilities, well-maintained fairways and greens, as well as a welcoming atmosphere.

Of the 30+ courses to select from, you’ll find a great deal of variety and choice: from the Nick Faldo-designed Oceanico Faldo Course, which makes clever use of the natural terrain, to the hugely popular Monte Rei course set in the spectacular foothills of the Eastern Algarve, golfers really are spoilt for choice.

Evening entertainment

After an enjoyable nine or 18 holes of golf, you’ll want to relax and unwind. And no matter what your favourite way of kicking back is, the Algarve can provide it. You can tuck into a fresh fish dish on the seafront, head for the lively bar and nightclub scene or simply take a long peaceful stroll along the beach. As with the courses, the Algarve can provide something for everyone.

Even golf widows and widowers can enjoy the Algarve, whether in the bustling shopping hotspot of Vilamoura, the water sports and activities available across the region’s many beaches or the Adega do Cantor winery, owned by none other than Sir Cliff Richard (image by theluxurycollection).

Spend a golfing holiday in the Algarve and you’ll want to come back time and time again. With courses designed by such legends as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo, you’ll be in good company from the moment you tee off. Beautiful surroundings, gorgeous weather and a broad choice of other activities all add to the magic. What are you waiting for?
