For some people, their idea of a vacation is to go and visit their friends from school who live 100 miles away. While there is no doubt that getting caught up with people you like is a great way to spend a few days, for experienced travelers a vacation is about visiting exotic places, seeing new sights and getting to know new cultures. The problem is that for most of us, that opportunity comes once or twice a year – the rest of the time we spend sitting in the office and wishing that we were somewhere else. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could combine travel and work, making your entire life a voyage of discovery? If this is something that appeals to you, then here are some great jobs that let you travel the world.
English teacher
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world – it is the international language of business and diplomacy, and is a common bridge between many different cultures. Because of this, there is a huge demand for English teachers around the world. Teaching English as a second language gives you an enormous choice of places to work abroad, and lets you really get to know the people who live in the country where you are working.
There are opportunities available to teach everyone from kindergarten children all the way through to adults, so there are English teaching positions to suit everyone. Not only that, many of these positions also offer free accommodation – which is very useful when you are traveling from country to country.
You will most likely need a Bachelor’s degree to become an English teacher abroad, and you may also have to be certified to teach as well – so you will have to put in some effort before you head out. However, once you do, there are many jobs available – for instance, you could work at one of the international schools that are affiliated with the US Department of State, or take a position in a private international school or university.
Resort manager
When you travel abroad, you most likely stay in a resort – at least from time to time – so why not work at one? Of course, many students take summer jobs working at resorts, but more senior positions are available – in fact, resorts are actually a good place to grow your career. For instance, if you have experience in sales or marketing, then working as a marketing director at a resort might be a great fit for you. Similarly, resorts and hotels are looking for people with strong human resources backgrounds, as well as proven management skills.
You might have to get some experience in the US hospitality industry first – but once you have spent a couple of years doing this, then you are a perfect candidate for a similar role in another country. To find these types of roles, contact a recruitment agency that specializes in hotel and resort recruiting. Alternatively, the next time you are on vacation, take a tour around the hotels and resorts in the area that you are visiting, and have a word with the management about the best way of going about securing a position there.(image by Image source).
Civil servant
This is another role that you can get through the US Department of State. The US Government always needs people to represent its interests abroad, either at one of the 265 US embassies around the world, or at one of the many other US Government offices in foreign countries.
One good thing about going after a civil service position abroad is that the range of roles available to you is very diverse. Whether you have a background in healthcare, IT, accounting or even general management, there is probably a job that is a good fit for your skills and experience. As well, civil service positions are generally well-paid, and some of them offer cost-of-living allowances, relocation and excellent benefits for you and your family.
However, you should be aware that the application process to become a civil servant is fairly intrusive – it includes a strict security clearance check that can take several months. During this time, you will be interviewed, and there is a good chance that your family and friends – and even your neighbors – will be interviewed as well. Of course, if you have no skeletons in your closet, then this is nothing to be concerned about – but the process still can be quite stressful.
